The Hydrogen Council released its latest Insights report today. It is full of data around current deployment and short-term outlook based on the project pipeline. A summary below.
Project pipeline
– Total announced: 680 projects
– Starting by 2030: 534 projects (USD 240 bln of investment). 61 Gigascale production projects (45 renewable/16 low-carbon)
– FEED: 165 projects (USD 109 bln)
– FID: USD 22 bln
– Europe has the largest share of investment announced (USD 76 bln) and North America has the largest share of investment committed (USD 8 bln with most on low-carbon projects)
– Share of total investment in hydrogen supply: 65% in proposals, 70% in FEED, 50% at FID stage
Hydrogen supply
– Announced (USD 156 billion). 26 MtH2/yr by 2030 (60/40 renewable/low-carbon) with another 15 MtH2/yr beyond that time horizon
– Projects at FEED (USD 76 billion). 15 MtH2/yr (55/45 renewable/low-carbon)
– FID (USD 11 billion). 2 MtH2/yr (30/70 renewable/low-carbon)
– Europe: 8 Mt, Latin America dominates renewable hydrogen (4.8 Mt by 2030) and North America low-carbon (4.7 Mt)
Infrastructure
– Announced. 40 projects (USD 24 billion). 50% Asia-Pacific, 25% Europe, 15% Middle East
– FEED. 7 projects (USD 8 billion). 30% Europe, 20% China, 20% Oceania
– Global trade. 50% of the volume announced has a technology associated (35% ammonia, 10% LOHC, 5% liquid hydrogen)
End uses
– Announced. 390 projects (USD 60 billion). 30% mobility, 30% steel, 25% existing uses
– FEED. 112 projects (USD 23 billion)
– FID. USD 6 billion. 25% road transport, 15% power
Manufacturing capacity
– Electrolyzer. 2021: 3.5 GW/yr (50% Europe, 2/3 atmospheric alkaline). 2022: 7 GW/yr. 2025 (announced): 45 GW/yr (40% Europe, 35% China)
– Fuelcells. 2021: 11 GW/yr (60% in Japan/South Korea). 2025 (announced): 28 GW/yr
Current (by 2021) deployment
– Low-carbon: 800 kt/yr (18 projects). 90% in North America
– Electrolysis: 550 MW (80% growth vs 2020). 200 MW in China, 170 MW in Europe. 2/3 for industry, 10% for mobility. 75/25 alkaline/PEM
– Road transport. 50000 #FCEV (65% growth vs 2020), 700 HRS (25% growth vs 2020). 10% of sales are commercial vehicles (75/25 #buses/ #trucks). 90% are FCEV (55% South Korea, 20% North America, 15% Japan)
– Rail. 10 trains operating with 60 ordered
