The clip explains part of the Steam Drum and the importance of maintaining the water level inside it, as any malfunction in the level—whether high or low—can lead to serious operational risks, from drawing water with saturated steam (carryover) to exposing boiler pipes to unsafe temperatures. Maintaining the level within the design limits is one of the most important factors for the safe operation of boilers. One of the most difficult stages in controlling the level is the stage of preparing the water before it enters the boiler, as this stage includes precise procedures that include opening and managing the drains, which vary according to their places and functions inside the boiler, including valve drains, some of which are wall drains, and some of which are related to superheater drains. Filling a kettle in Cold Start-up mode is completely different from filling it in Hot Start-up mode, both in terms of the input rate and the thermal effect on the boiler body. It is more difficult to maintain the level at the ignition of the first burner and the onset of temperatures, but the strongest and most sensitive effect is when the second burner is ignited, where the pressure and the appearance of steam begins, and upon reaching certain pressure and heat values, the Superheater Drains are gradually closed, and at higher pressure, the Superheater Vent is closed, all of which requires careful follow-up and a correct response from the control room. The risk is maximum in emergencies, such as boiler feed water pumps being shut down or water completely shut down, where boxing may occur and the level drops to zero level as seen in the control room. The real danger lies when the boiler is restarted and the boiler can be refilled, as the water cannot be introduced at the same rate of cold operation, but must be introduced by a dripping method and with a very low flow rate, point by point, and it may take more than four hours to compensate for the level, in order to avoid thermal shocks caused by the entry of cold water into a boiler with a high temperature.
