The Process Automation division from SICK offers sensors and tailored system solutions as well as services for analysis and process measurement technology. When measuring emissions, they monitor legally prescribed gas components, accurately record dust particle emissions and measure volumetric flow. The ultrasonic technology offered by SICK is the leader in the precise flow measurement of natural gas in pipeline distribution networks as well as for process gases and steam. SICK’s measurement technology solutions make a valuable contribution to emission monitoring and process control across multiple industries, including a broad range of fertilizer production processes.

SICK AG: Fertilizer Industry / Emission Monitoring

Measuring and reporting emissions to atmosphere from various fertilizer production processes brings with it a number of technical challenges.

Trace concentrations of dust particles and pollutant gases, such as ammonia (NH3) must be measured accurately often in water-saturated conditions behind wet scrubber abatement systems. In-situ technologies, such as ultra-sonic flow-meters must be very robust so as to withstand the corrosive nature of wet, acidic components, such as hydrofluoric acid (HF).

Sick is uniquely able to offer complete solutions for reporting all dust and gaseous emissions from solid fertilizer production processes, covering both concentration-based emission limit values, as well as mass emissions (kg/hour). The technologies applied typically comprise a specialized “wet dust” particle analyser, selective gas analysers to measure emissions of ammonia (NH3) and/or hydrogen fluoride (HF) and an ultra-sonic flow meter.

All the technologies applied have been tailored specifically, both in terms of design principle as well as material selection, to address the unique challenges found when measuring and reporting emissions from fertilizer production.
