N+S Fertilizers: An Opportunity in these difficult times

The recent war against Iran threatens not only the flow of petrol and gas, but is also likely to impact fertilizer supply due to disruption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. India and other Asian countries are all likely to face potential shortage of significant amounts of urea, ammonia and sulphur thereby raising the input cost for farmers ahead of the Kharif season.  Not alone this, the domestic production too is likely to suffer as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) forms the main feedstock of the production of urea. Several urea plants rely upon nafta or fuel oil which in turn are derived out of crude oil. The scenario is grim as 30 per cent of fertiliser production in India owes itself to LNG.

Urea plus Ammonium Sulphate and Urea plus Gypsum fertilizers can provide a great opportunity to lighten the burden of these Asian countries: This is because these N+S fertilizers show higher nitrogen use efficiencies and lighten the lack of sulphur in many soils. At the same time the quality of prills will improve leading to less losses during production and application.
