IFS Conference 2025 – The Future of Fertilizers: Innovation, Carbon Reduction & Soil Health

Reflections of Dr Khalid Mahmood, Partnerships and Development Lead, British Society of Soil Science: “Last week’s IFS Annual Conference brought together scientists, innovators, and industry leaders to discuss one of agriculture’s most urgent priorities: the need for novel fertilizers that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, restore soil health, and support resilient, productive farming systems.
As the sector faces increasing pressure to cut GHG emissions from fertilizer production and use, it is clear that we must accelerate the adoption of low-carbon nutrient technologies, improve farm nutrient management, and strengthen training and capacity building for farmers.
Digital tools that align with emerging SFI requirements are becoming essential – helping farmers make data-driven decisions, optimise nutrient-use efficiency, and meet sustainability standards with confidence.
In rice systems, methane emissions remain one of the largest agricultural GHG challenges. The adoption of Alternate Wetting & Drying (AWD) tubes offers a proven, low-cost intervention to reduce methane by regulating water levels and improving field aeration.
Emerging solutions such as biochar and Basalt rock weathering show strong potential for carbon capture, enhanced nutrient cycling, and long-term ecosystem benefits. These innovations can play a pivotal role in improving soil function while supporting net-zero pathways. The discussions in Robinson College, Cambridge highlighted a shared commitment across the sector: to transform fertilizer systems so they work for farmers, climate, and the environment. Exciting times ahead for collaborative science, policy, and innovation in sustainable agriculture.”

President Hans Reuvers handed over to the Francis New medal to Harri Kiiski, who gave an inspiring presentation: “Feeding the population of the Valeriepieris Circle: Challenges and opportunities for Modern Fertilizer Production”, a must read for all of us.
