GRANDPERSPECTIVE: Can we see Gasoline?
Things we ask ourselves on a sunny summer day: Can we see Gasoline?
Yes, we do! Gasoline (or petrol) is a mixture mainly of hydrocarbons. Once it evaporates our scanfeld sensor can pick up the vapors and detect it safely from the distance. The spectral fingerprint of the collected infrared light carries all the information we need.
The figure shows a black and white camera image with an indication for the scan area (green rectangle) and the gas detection superimposed in red.
Note: None of the precious substance (except some vapor) was wasted during the experiment.
