        At our site we utilize the following type of pulsation dampeners on the discharge side of the NH3 and Carbamate pumps, with materials matching the piping, and have seen few problems. Eventually due to the cyclic service one expects these devices may crack, so we perform regular inspection to check for this.

            Hi Mocznik,

            Do you have only dampener on discharge side or in both suction and discharge?

            Regarding the material, for both Ammonia and Carbamate pumps the dampener’s material will be the same as piping material.

              If one takes the right choice of materials and perform proper inspection and maintenance , I should be ok. Or do you have already other experiences ?

              As far as the type of dampeners I would check with the pump vendors or as vibration specialists.

                Dear Mark,

                Could you advice which pulsation dampeners producers to choose? We are worring about corrosion from ammonia and carbamate side. I think our pulsation dampeners can corrode and it can cause future problems.

                Any advice what is the alternative way to replace pulsation dampeners? Which one to choose?

                  Pulsation dampeners are typically a good solution to reduce vibration issues

                  HP recip pump vendors can provide advise about it

                  For new plants, Pulsation and Mechanical Analysis (PMA) typically is used during the design phase.

                  In other cases, a PMA can be performed depending on the status quo of the system
                  The aim is to minimize the level of residual pulsation to < 3%
                  An analysis includes a pulsation study, a mechanical review, mechanical frequency avoidance analysis and a forced response analysis (per API 674, API RP 688)

                  Several incidents did occur due to too high vibration levels, like for example ruptured pipelines

                    In Police we are using hydraulic accumulators (see in attachment) to reduce hydraulic problems on pressing side in HP ammonia and carbamate plunger pumps . What are your ideas to prevent or reduce hydraulic problems with plunger pumps on pressing side?
