      Dear Mark,
We have in the HP Syngas Loop of NH3 butterfly valves Fisher of the series 7600 and A11
In general the valves have operated with good result, since 2000 yr.
However, they have experienced some common failure modes that, from my point of view, they constitute a weak point in the design (and in this sense I would like to share good experiences that others have had).
These failures were, incipient packings leakage, that several times led to a plant shutdown, to be able to repair them without risks.
The valves are of special series production from Fisher Control France.
There are in that circuit 4 valves, 3 of the series 7600 and one A11 (20 inch).
      Valves Features:
      – 02-HV-5001: Hand control By-Pass Of Hot Heat Exchanger Synthesis Gas 02-E-503, 10 Inch #2500 RTJ, Leakage at 0° open: 0,7% of max.capacity, Max Diff Press: 225 Kg/cm2, Temp: 37°C.
      – 02-HV-5002: Hand control Synthesis Gas To Ammonia Converter 02-R-501, 20 inch #2500 BW, Leak Class II, Max Diff Press: 225 Kg/cm2, Temp: 225°C.
      – 02-TV-5003: Temperature control By-Pass Of Waste Heat Boiler 02-E-502, 12 inch #2500 RTJ, Leakage at 0°open: 1,5% of max. capacity, Max Diff Press: 225 Kg/cm2, Temp: 340°C.
      – 02-TV-5011: Temperature control Cold Shot For Ammonia Converter 02-R-501, 14 inch #2500, Leakage at 0°open: 1,1% of max. capacity, Max Diff Press: 225 Kg/cm2, Temp: 225°C.
      The materials are:
      Body: A217 WC9
      Trim materials: AISI316 + Stellite
      Packing: Graphoil

      Regards
      Pablo

        Synthesis gas composition is about:
        H2 53%, N2 18%, Ar 3%, CH4 6%, NH3 20%
        Pressure 185 bar
        Temperature 410 degC

Who has good experiences with High Pressure Butterfly valves under these conditions ?

        Thanks !!

          Dear Mark;

Can you specify the service/location of syn gas which you are referring?

In high pressure synthesis loop, normally ball or globe valves are used with carbon steel body and SS 316 trim.

What are your experiences with High Pressure Butterfly Valves in syngas service of NH3 plants ?
Which leak classes one can realise ?
Which materials of construction are used ?
Which vendors you have good experiences ?

            Thank You !
